Ensembles

In addition to the B-Grade Concert Band, we operate the Development Band and the Community Winds for all ages, as well as a Marching Band with an extensive repertoire for each

Derwent Valley Concert Band

The Derwent Valley Concert Band is the ‘flag-ship’ ensemble for the organisation and is suitable for musicians who wish to rehearse and perform a wide variety of high quality repertoire. This band aims for musical excellence in performance thereby requiring members to commit to daily home practice and regular attendance at weekly rehearsals.

The DVCB performs throughout the year at many community events including Australia Day and ANZAC Day, presents a concert series in venues around Hobart and competes in both state and national band championships. In addition, since its very early days, the band has toured internationally on a regular basis. The 10 tours (to date) have visited 15 countries with the band rehearsing and performing with local ensembles, participating in competitions and presenting concerts – most often with a strong emphasis on Australian compositions.

Support for local composers through the commissioning and performance of new works is seen as an important role for the band. New music has been premièred in concerts at home and overseas with several pieces receiving world première performances at the Mid-Europe Wind Orchestra and Music Educators Festival (Schladming, Austria).

Rehearsals are held every Wednesday night (late January through to Christmas) from 7.00pm to 9.30pm at our band rooms in the Memorial Hall, Circle Street, New Norfolk.

Derwent Valley Community Winds

The Derwent Valley Community Winds was formed in 2016 (under the name of Intermediate Band) to provide an opportunity for musicians to continue to develop their instrumental and ensemble skills in a fun and welcoming atmosphere and, for those aspiring to play at a very high level, to facilitate their transition into the Derwent Valley Concert Band.

Since its formation, the band has been conducted by Andrew Castles, an experienced educator and a fine musician. During the year, the band performs at several events both in its own right and combined with the Derwent Valley Concert Band – at the organisation’s Annual Gala Concerts, the Derwent Valley Autumn Festival, open garden events, the Collinsvale Market, and the Hobart Twilight Market. The band also participates in the Tasmanian Bands League State Championships.

Rehearsals are held every Monday night, 7pm to 8:30pm, at our band rooms in the Memorial Hall, Circle Street, New Norfolk. Please bring along your own instrument – percussion instruments provided.

Derwent Valley Development Band

The Derwent Valley Development Band was formed to give students and adults alike the opportunity to begin their band career in a welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment.

The Development Band provides professional instruction in skill development and ensemble playing. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm (during school terms) at our band rooms at the Memorial Hall, Circle Street, New Norfolk.

Woodwind, brass and percussion players of all ages are invited to join our program. Instruments will be provided for percussionists but woodwind and brass players will need to bring their own. It is recommended that those wishing to join this exciting program have some basic ability in reading and playing music.

The band is currently conducted by Frances White who is an experienced music educator and accomplished trombonist. The band has played at many community events over past years including the Derwent Valley Autumn Festival, the Bushy Park Show, local school fairs and at the DVCB annual Gala Concerts.

Derwent Valley Marching Band

The Derwent Valley Marching Band was formed in 1997 to contribute to the bands extensive events and opportunities. The Band welcomes new playing members who are dedicated to memorising charts and are fit and able to march for extended periods.

Since its formation, the DVCB Marching Band has contributed much to the community, marching annually in the Hobart and New Norfolk Christmas pageants, New Norfolk ANZAC Day street march, Derwent Valley Autumn Festival, and opening the Derwent Valley Relay for Life. The Marching Band has also toured internationally, having opened the Showband Marching Championship, competed in the World Championships for Marching Band Show Band (earning 10th place), and was recipient of 1st prize in the March and Standstill competition in Germany in 2015.

Chris Rice and Marinda Trembath are the current Drum Majors and have worked hard to extend players, mastering new formations regularly to create an ever more versatile marching band.

Rehearsals are held at Dominic College on the first Sunday of every month, 10am to 12pm. Please bring along your own instrument.
